Where to eat in Mitte – the 10 best places between Torstraße and the Weinbergspark

Two pizzerias with opposite theories, a sourdough croissant with its own queue and a tasting menu behind a red door: Mitte eats standing up.

The ten addresses that carry Mitte share a trait none of them puts on the sign: the counter matters more than the table plan. Short counters, a pizza window, a 26-metre slab of oak in a basement, a narrow strip beside the till — and often a queue in front. Exactly one house breaks the pattern.

Ten addresses between Torstraße, the Sophienhöfe and the Weinbergspark — from a bánh mì eaten standing up to a menu behind a red door.

Bar Basta – from pop-up to permanent

Mitte · EuropeanBar BastaTo the map

What began as the „Lobb" pop-up at Casa Camper has become permanent: since March 2025 Caecilia Baldszus and Arash Ghassemi have run the hotel on Weinmeisterstraße in two phases — weekend breakfast and evening service, with the bar going until 1am. The name sounds Italian; the concept is Berlin.

Take the çılbır off the breakfast menu: Turkish eggs with yoghurt and Mexican salsa macha, two kitchens on one plate.

SOFI – the sourdough croissant with its own queue

Mitte · BakerySOFITo the map

In the second courtyard of the Sophienhöfe sits a bakery with a Nordic hand: open bakeroom, a short counter, a range that comes almost daily straight from the oven behind it. Ancient grains from small organic farms in northern Europe, long fermentation, no hurry at all.

The sourdough croissant is why the queue forms on the cobbles outside. Freshly churned butter gets cut alongside it.

Slice Society – New York by the slice

Mitte · ItalianSlice SocietyTo the map

On Torstraße, NY-style pizza crosses the counter by the slice: four red, one white, every one thin, crisp and foldable. The counter is the stage — slices are cut in front of you, reheated, handed over. Walk in, queue, take one or two.

The pepperoni is the flagship: house-spiced salami, grated parmigiano, a squeeze of hot honey on request.

Kolo Coffee – a micro-roastery running competition beans

Mitte · CoffeeKolo CoffeeTo the map

Kolo is coffee shop, Berlin micro-roastery and showroom in one. Founder Vladyslav Demonenko took second at the 2022 Coffee in Good Spirits world championship and won the 2023 Ukrainian Brewers Cup. On Brunnenstraße, espresso, hand-brewed filter and signature drinks cross the counter.

The focus is single origins, rare microlots and competition coffees, roasted in Berlin. On weekdays it closes at 4pm.

W Pizza Mitte – Neapolitan, self-service

Mitte · ItalianW Pizza MitteTo the map

The second branch of the Neukölln pizzeria opened on Invalidenstraße in spring 2022; both specialise in Neapolitan pizza with a wide rim. Heavy marble tables, big windows, self-service: pizza is collected at the counter, small calzoni go to take away.

The pick is the pizza with lemon-zest pesto, which stands apart from the standard repertoire. Natural wine comes from Caminito next door.

Oukan – the one house where you sit down

Mitte · VeganOukanTo the map

Behind the red lacquered door in a courtyard off Ackerstraße opens a room that reads as sacral: dark concrete, dimmed light, a huge bonsai in the main hall. Oukan is Berlin's vegan fine-dining house on a Japanese line, cooking out of its own fermentation lab.

The menu changes regularly and runs across five to eight courses, staged at the table. Wednesday to Saturday from six.

Freundschaft – 500 bottles along 26 metres of oak

Mitte · BarFreundschaftTo the map

In the basement of an old building on Mittelstraße, a 26-metre oak counter runs the length of the room, and behind it a list of around 500 bottles. Austria and France lead, with fifteen to twenty wines by the glass in rotation. Small growers, biodynamic or conventional, stand side by side.

Music comes off the record player only, and there are no cocktails. The bar food is built as an accompaniment.

Saveur de Bánh Mì – two sandwiches, and that is the whole menu

Mitte · VietnameseSaveur de Bánh Mì MitteTo the map

At the top of Veteranenstraße the queue reaches back towards the Weinbergspark opposite. Inside, two sandwiches wait: one with chicken, one vegan. The baguette is baked for the shop alone — crackling outside, so airy inside that it springs back at the first bite.

Ordering runs by QR code at the counter. Take the house chilli sauce; it burns long at the back.

Distrikt – brunch with a queue down Bergstraße

Mitte · CaféDistriktTo the map

A few steps from the natural history museum, Distrikt has settled in as a brunch address with industrial-loft character: bare walls, wooden furniture, plenty of daylight. The menu reads as a best-of contemporary Berlin café cooking — avocado on sourdough, French toast with roasted hazelnuts, granola, pancakes.

The specialty coffee programme takes filter as seriously as the flat white. On Saturdays the queue runs down Bergstraße.

Standard Serious Pizza Mitte – the other pizza theory on Torstraße

Mitte · ItalianStandard Serious Pizza MitteTo the map

Standard Window is the format on Torstraße: a pizza window with a standing counter and bar stools, not a full restaurant. The same dough discipline as at the Pfefferberg, only more compact. The menu stays short and rotates seasonally, buffalo mozzarella and Prague ham as the topping vocabulary.

The L'Ape che punge is the pick for anyone who wants heat. The natural wine list tips the place into a bar with dough at night.

Bottom line

What Mitte does well happens mostly standing up: a counter instead of a table plan, a pizza window, a narrow strip beside the till, and a few minutes of queue in front of each. Two pizzerias with opposite theories, a baguette from their own oven — and for sitting down, Oukan, behind the red door.
