Ari's

Diner in a garage off Glogauer Straße: smash burgers with a Peruvian twist, the Lima Kreuzburger and a Green Goddess salad.

From the street all you see on Glogauer Straße is a garage door, no sign. Behind it, in a courtyard not far from Görlitzer Park, is Ari's, a diner in a converted garage, with cream-coloured booths, an orange-red floor and an open kitchen. Ari is Arianna Plevisani. She grew up in Lima and came to Berlin via New York. She calls her cooking a Peruvian version of American food, of the America she knew as a child from TV and books.

The menu has burgers, sandwiches, pancakes and salads. The smash burgers have crisp edges, and the Lima Kreuzburger, the chef's favourite, comes with fried potato sticks under the patty and ají amarillo, the yellow chilli sauce from Peru. The fries come with a trio of ají amarillo, ají verde and house mayo, and the Spicy Green Goddess goes with it all, iceberg lettuce with herb dressing and crispy chilli. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 10 pm; no reservations, card only.
