Restaurant Austria Das Original
Alpine hut energy in Bergmannkiez: dark wood, antlers, and a Wiener Schnitzel of veal that reaches well beyond the rim of the plate.
Restaurant Austria Das Original is a Austrian restaurant in Kreuzberg, priced 20–30 €. Open Mon 16:00-23:00, Tue-Thu 12:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-00:00, Sun 12:00-23:00.
In Bergmannkiez, a stone's throw from Marheinekeplatz, a door opens onto a room where the walls are dark and antlers hang like in an alpine hunting lodge.
Inside there is plenty of wood, dimmed light, dark green wall panels — an alpine hut in the middle of Kreuzberg. On the plates: classic Austrian cooking with no reinvention — Tafelspitz, cheese spaetzle, Kaiserschmarrn. The lead role goes to the Wiener Schnitzel of veal, which reaches well past the rim of the plate, served with potato salad. During warmer months a narrow street terrace opens onto Bergmannstraße. An address that appears in an international novel as a love letter to Berlin.
