Café Frieda

Neighbourhood bistro on Helmholtzplatz: market cooking from Brandenburg, in-house sourdough, natural wine and records.

Ben Zviel and Samina Raza first ran Mrs Robinson's a few streets away. In 2021 they opened Café Frieda on Helmholtzplatz, where the Mexican restaurant Frida Kahlo used to be. Zviel comes from Israel and cooks, Raza is a sommelier.

Frieda sees itself as a modern take on the classic neighbourhood bistro. The kitchen works with what farms and artisans in Brandenburg and elsewhere in Europe deliver. Bread and pastries are baked in-house every day, the sourdough from old grain varieties. To finish there is an ice cream made from cow's milk from local farms. The wine list focuses on growers who work with respect for nature. Records play over a sound system built in Berlin, from jazz to ambient to hip hop. Dinner and Saturday lunch are booked via the website; for a drink you can just drop by.
