Cocktailbar Berlin

The best cocktail bars in Berlin – from speakeasy to listening bar

A quarter century of Victoria Bar, a bar behind an unmarked door and drinks paired to five-course menus: nine Berlin cocktail bars worth dressing up for.

Berlin's bar scene has two faces: the classics that have held their posture for decades, and a new generation working with centrifuges, seasonal produce and hi-fi systems. Both are increasingly walking the same path — away from loud nights out, toward the serious drink.

Nine bars between Schöneberg, Mitte and Neukölln — from the institution to the room where the music stands equal to the glass.

Victoria Bar – the grande dame of Potsdamer Straße

Schöneberg · BarVictoria BarTo the map

Stefan Weber and Beate Hindermann have run Victoria Bar since 2001 — after the 2022 fire, the interior was restored true to the original: wood panelling, hand-painted wallpaper, honey-yellow lamps above a yearly-changing picture gallery. One of the few Berlin addresses that has held the same posture for over two decades.

Order a house creation from the Schule der Trunkenheit instead of a default classic — and come late, it's open deep into the night.

Bar Zentral – under the tracks in Charlottenburg

Charlottenburg · BarBar ZentralTo the map

In the S-Bahn arch at Lotte-Lenya-Bogen, Torsten Bender and Sebastian Mathow — both formerly behind the Green Door counter — have run a bar since 2015 that serves classics with a modern twist in stylish minimalism: black walls, a counter of wood and black marble, no noise. West Berlin's most serious answer to the Mitte bar scene.

Don't memorise a menu — give the bartenders two preferences and wait for the result. This counter is built for exactly that.

Green Door – the Schöneberg evergreen

Schöneberg · BarGreen Door BarTo the map

Behind the green door at Winterfeldtstraße 50, you ring before you drink — a Schöneberg ritual since the nineties. Inside: patterned walls, a dense atmosphere and a menu that takes the classics more seriously than any fashion. The bar where part of Berlin's current bartending generation learned the trade.

Ring, walk in, order a classic — no experiments needed here.

Velvet – seasonal cooking in a glass, Neukölln

Neukölln · BarVelvetTo the map

On Ganghoferstraße in Neukölln, Velvet works like a good kitchen: seasonal produce from regional farms forms the base, the menu changes weekly, and whatever is ripe right now ends up in the glass as ferment, syrup or distillate. Cocktails as produce-driven cooking — nobody in Berlin does it more consistently.

Don't look for the menu from your last visit — it's gone. That's exactly why you go.

FABELEI – the bright antithesis in the Akazienkiez

Schöneberg · BarFABELEI CocktailbarTo the map

Pale wood, big windows, smoke-free — FABELEI sets itself coffeehouse-bright against the dark speakeasy cliché. Behind the counter: fat-washing, fermentation and a centrifuge, with syrups and cordials made in-house, plus a bistro kitchen — Classic Tuesday, tartare Thursdays, and a recurring supper club with five courses and corresponding drinks.

Thursday tartare plus a drink from the classics section — the combination this room was built for.

KINK – 100 metres of neon at Pfefferberg

Mitte · BarKINK Bar & RestaurantTo the map

Oliver Mansaray's two-storey bar-restaurant hybrid takes both menus seriously — the one at the table and the one at the bar. The red neon-tube installation runs as a 100-metre thread through the interior, making this one of the most spectacular rooms in the city; out back waits one of Berlin's oldest beer gardens.

Start at the bar, move to the beer garden under the old lime trees in summer — and risk the asparagus ice cream with black garlic.

Anima – the listening bar on the Spree

Friedrichshain · BarAnimaTo the map

At the Locke hotel on the East Side Gallery, a Berlin-built hi-fi system holds the centre, playing curated records — inspired by Japanese kissaten. In the evening the room tips into listening mode: cocktails, a focused wine list and Mediterranean small plates against sound that is anything but background — plus the Spree terrace with a view of the Wall.

Start on the terrace, move inside after sunset — listening mode only ignites once the room goes dark.

Bonvivant – cocktails paired to five courses

Schöneberg · VegetarianBonvivant Cocktail BistroTo the map

On Goltzstraße the programme runs as a twin set: five or six vegetarian courses on one side, a precisely calibrated cocktail pairing by Nikodemus Berger on the other — available fully non-alcoholic. Pastel velvet lounge up front, dark-green bistro at the back, and in between a bar where you can eat along.

Book the cocktail pairing instead of ordering à la carte — the drinks are built onto the courses, not the other way round.

Bottom line

Berlin's best bars share one stance: the drink isn't a side note to going out, it's the reason for it. Behind an unmarked door, under railway arches or next to a hi-fi rig — sit down at one of these counters and you will be taken seriously. Cheers.
